Submissions

To contribute to the IRCOBI conference there are two options: full conference papers and short communications. Note that for all contributions IRCOBI Council requires that papers offered for consideration have not been published elsewhere prior to presentation at the IRCOBI conference. Abstracts, papers and presentations must be in English.

Scope

IRCOBI’s scope is the biomechanics of injury. Historically, the focus of IRCOBI, has been the avoidance and reduction of the severity of injuries related to road-traffic collisions, with special emphasis on advanced safety technologies. Papers on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and prevention of injury in every-day life, sports, aviation, the military, etc. are welcome in addition to those on transportation-related injuries. Accordingly, we are interested in submissions in the following areas, as they pertain to the biomechanics of injury:

• collision and injury database analysis including crash reconstructions;
• injury biomechanics including injury mechanisms, injury criteria, and tissue mechanics (from cellular level to whole body);
• mechanical (crash test dummies) and computational models of active and passive human body response to loads that result in injury;
• the effect of advanced accident avoidance and mitigation technologies and assessment methods on injury biomechanics;
• safety aspects of assisted and automated driving, within the context of injury biomechanics;
• advanced protection methods, including adaptive systems, for occupants (including children, elderly, and special groups), of all types of vehicles (e.g. car, bus, boat, train, plane, etc.), and of vulnerable road users (such as pedestrians and cyclists);
• crashworthiness (including compatibility) of vehicle designs;
• influence of vehicle and equipment design on injury outcome.

Paper format and review process

1. Full Conference Paper
   This category of submission is aimed at attracting presentations of complete research studies. All full conference papers require the submission of an initial abstract. All abstracts will be reviewed by the Council and authors of successful abstracts will be invited to prepare a draft paper. A full conference paper will be at most 12 pages in length (supplementary material may additionally be provided as a separate document where appropriate) and will be peer reviewed by members of the Council and/or SRC. Accepted papers are included in the conference proceedings, presented at the conference, and published online after the conference.
   
2. Short Communication
   This category of submission is aimed at attracting presentations on research which fits one of the following categories: (1) work in progress with at least preliminary results; (2) development of a biomechanics tool or novel methodology. A short communication should provide enough motivation, methodology, and result to communicate with the audience for feedback and discussion. A short communication will be at most 2 pages in length and will be peer reviewed by members of the Council and/or STC. Accepted papers are included in the conference proceedings, presented at the conference, and published online after the conference.
   

Conference presentation: An in-person presentation is expected for all accepted full conference papers and short communications. There may be extraneous circumstances where the authors of an accepted paper are unable to attend the conference and are unable to identify a suitable delegate to give the presentation. In these cases, the authors are responsible for informing IRCOBI at least two weeks prior to the week of the conference to arrange an alternative presentation if possible. For full conference papers, a pre-recorded the presentation may be shown at the conference. For short communications, the paper will be removed from the program but will remain in the conference proceedings. Remote presentations are not an option. Repeated cases of missing presentations may impact an author’s ability to publish at IRCOBI.

Publication scheme: All papers and short communications are published in the annual conference proceedings. The proceedings are distributed to the conference delegates. In addition all material is published on IRCOBI website shortly after the conference. Online publication also allows the inclusion of additional material such as data, diagrams, pictures and video sequences in an appendix. All online material is freely accessible and the full conference papers are indexed under SCOPUS and Engineering Index / Compendex. Authors are required to accept a license agreement that enables IRCOBI to publish the conference papers online.
